Women started in journalism!

The Iraqi first lady, Hero Khan Ibrahim, and the German Consul in Erbil, Rolf Ulrich, took part in the closing ceremony for the 'Women start in journalism'-course of IMCK. On September 6, 2012, thirteen young women from Sulaymaniya and surroundings were given their certificates after finishing the six weeks course in basic journalism.

The ceremony took place at the Rewan Hall in Sulaymaniya. Hero Khan was presented with a copy of the newspaper the women made during the course, and a news program that they made was shown. Mr Ulrich stressed in his speech to the participants the need for women to work in journalism in Kurdistan and to report on common subjects, as they will notice different details than their male colleagues.

The ceremony finalized six weeks of training in which print, internet and TV were covered. Trainers were Khaled Sulaiman (lead trainer), Ako Mohammed and Shwan Mohammed (print), Salam Ibrahim and Mustafa Qais (TV), Sardasht Aziz (internet, design), Amin Anwer (editing) and Beshad  Shwani (camera).

Rewan newspaper will in its next issue publish a number of pages with stories made by the participants.

خالد سليمان  يشير مدير المعهد العلمي للبيئة في جامعة جنيف مارتن بينيستون إلى ذوبان شبه كلي لثلوج جبال الألب نهاية القرن الحالي، حيث لا يبقى سوى القليل منه في الأعالي. يعود سبب ذوبان هذه الثلوج التي تغذي أنهار (راين، دانوب، بو، رون) ويعتمدها ١٦٠ مليون نسمة في غالبية أنحاء أوروبا للزراعة والنقل والطاقة والغذاء، إلى التغيير المناخي وارتفاع درجات حرارة الأرض، ناهيك عن الازدياد السكاني حيث تشير الإحصائيات المتوقعة إلى وصول نسبة سكان المعمورة إلى ١٠ ملايين نهاية هذا القرن.  كانت هذه الصورة بداية لمؤتمر دولي بعنوان “السلام الأزرق” حول دور المياه في السلام والتنمية المستدامة في الشرق الأوسط نظمه Stratigic Foresight Group وجامعة جنيف بالتعاون مع وكالة سويسرا للتنمة والتعاون الاسبوع الثاني من شهر أكتوبر ٢٠١٥.

MIDDLE EAST Human Rights Watch outraged by video showing Syrian rebel commander Abu Sakkar cutting out government soldier's heart and eating it

By John Hall A graphic video has emerged of a Syrian rebel commander cutting the heart out of a  soldier’s chest and biting into it. Described by Human Rights Watch as “emblematic” of a civil war that has rapidly descended into sectarian hatred and revenge killings, the amateur footage was posted on the internet yesterday - sparking outrage among opposition figures, as well as supporters of President Bashar al-Assad. Human Rights Watch said the video shows Abu Sakkar – the prominent founder of rebel group Farouq Brigade, which originated in Homs. In the clip, Sakkar cuts into the chest of the dead soldier before ripping out his heart and liver and declaring: “I swear to God we will eat your hearts and your livers, you soldiers of Bashar the dog”. To off-screen cheers and chants of “Allahu akbar [God is Great]”, the man then bites into the heart.
